Goreme National Park is a familiar heritage name. It concerns part of the Cappadocia landscape. It also appears in UNESCO's World Heritage title. The old park label is one thing. The heritage site is another. A entry ticket is a separate product. Use the landscape name for context, then plan entry to each named site separately.
The UNESCO site includes rock sites and the underground cities of Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı. Its title retains the national-park name. A 2019 decision revoked the earlier national-park status decision. Neither label creates one entry ticket for all the places. Check each museum and walk through its own current access source.
What the Goreme National Park heritage landscape covers
UNESCO's site record describes a wider landscape of rock-cut settlement and natural formations. It includes Göreme's rock sites and the subterranean cities of Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı. Source checked October 2026. It is a heritage framework, not a single visitor route you can complete through one gate.
The record links churches and dwellings with places of refuge. They belong in the same wider story. Their evidence can still differ.
A painting can have a date. That does not date every bare room below ground. Keep the wider account at that scale.
Goreme National Park name versus current status
Decision 1673 was published in October 2019. It revoked the earlier decision that named Göreme Valley and nearby land as a national park. The original decision text reproduced by LEXPERA gives that action; the Official Gazette record is its original publication route.
UNESCO's title still uses the familiar park name. That helps explain the old travel terms. They are not the same as today's site management. Check the named venue or route for a visit. Do not infer access from the old park label.
The UNESCO site did not vanish with that change.
Rock sites, museum and underground cities
Göreme Open Air Museum is a named venue within this wider landscape. Its churches and rock-cut spaces have their own admission and route records. Derinkuyu is a separate museum below ground. Kaymaklı is another distinct underground visit. They share a heritage setting.
They do not share one ticket or one schedule.

How to fit Derinkuyu into a visit
Give Derinkuyu a clear place in the day. Confirm the museum entry and the whole journey from your base. If a tour is used, its written route should name Derinkuyu. A generic underground-city stop could mean a different museum and should not silently replace your main goal.
Pair a surface museum or walk only after the main visit and transport are settled. A region map shows where venues lie, but does not prove that their opening times or transfers fit. Do not use the heritage boundary as a timetable.
Nearby heritage and walking choices
The official GoTürkiye landscape guide names local heritage places and valleys. It is useful for choosing an interest. It is not a live trail-status map. A valley walk needs a confirmed route and a return plan, while a viewpoint may be a separate surface stop.
This site's Cappadocia guides separate those decisions. Use the museum guide for churches. Read the valley guides to choose a view or walk. The route guides help with usable days.
The stay guide helps with pickup and room needs. It does not rank whole towns.

Verdict on Goreme National Park
Read Goreme National Park as a familiar heritage name with a changed national status. Plan the actual trip through named venue and route records. Keep Derinkuyu's visit distinct from the wider landscape and from Göreme Open Air Museum's entry.
