Derinkuyu tunnels are narrow links within the rock-cut site, connecting rooms and parts of its underground network. The museum says some links are only wide enough for one person. That helps explain controlled movement inside a refuge. But does not show an open route to another underground city.
Distinguish a passage you can see from the larger network described in a plan. A stone barrier can close a connection, and a historic drawing may show areas outside the current visitor path. This guide supplies no underground walking route to Kaymaklı. Use surface transport between separate venue entrances and follow the museum route below ground.
Derinkuyu tunnels and room links
The Ministry's description explains rooms linked by small tunnels and large round stone barriers at some passage entrances. It explains how a barrier could control movement. We do not assign an exact age to a passage from that form alone.
A narrow link can restrict passage while a room gives space for a task. Those are different uses within the refuge account. A large room beyond a tunnel does not imply that its approach is wide, and a photo cannot guarantee how the space will feel to every visitor.
What a plan can and cannot show
The museum brochure has a site drawing and level labels. Use it to read the museum's account of linked rooms. It is not a current exit plan. The route open to visitors can be smaller than the recorded network.
A line on a drawing may show a passage. A shaft joins spaces above and below. Check the legend before interpreting either as a walkable path. The drawing does not give you turns to follow. We do not guess passage lengths from it.
Claims about Kaymaklı
A claim of a historic link needs a named survey or original record. Repeating the claim on tour pages does not show an open path. Nor does a claim about an ancient link mean a visitor can use it today.
Keep the travel question separate. Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı have distinct above-ground entrances. Plan a vehicle or another confirmed surface journey between them. Do not enter a closed passage to search for a route mentioned in a travel story.

Verdict on Derinkuyu tunnels
Read Derinkuyu tunnels as parts of the museum site. The museum's account supports narrow room links and stone barriers, while current signs determine the visit. Sources checked and editorial update: 14 October 2026.
